From the Latin cassius, "poor poor", and Cassia, name of a Roman family.
This name was that of two of Julius Caesar's assassins. Saint Cassian was a tutor under the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate. He was allegedly murdered by his students, whom he attempted to convert to Christianity, which made him the patron of teachers and writers.
The Cassians are celebrated on August 13th.
