Strapping, what for?

During pregnancy, the cervix may open before term and increase the risk of miscarriage or premature delivery. To avoid this, strapping may be necessary. What is it about ? Olivier Multon, gynecologist at the polyclinic of Nantes tells us more.

What is a strapping?

  • When the cervix no longer fulfills its role and opens itself during pregnancy, strapping may be necessary. This is the laying of a thick thread, comparable to a lace, in the thickness of the cervix, so as to form a kind of closed purse. Depending on the stage of pregnancy, the goal is to prevent miscarriage or premature delivery. This concerns about 0.5% of pregnant women.

In which cases does one practice a strapping?

The main indication of the strapping is the gap of the cervix. While it should remain closed until delivery, the collar opens by itself and no longer serves as a lock.

  • The causes of the open bite of the cervix are multiple : It can be congenital, due to a malformation of the uterus or affect women who have had serious pregnancy accidents previously (very premature delivery or late miscarriage)
  • Strapping is not a preventive treatment premature labor. On the contrary, this technique tends to increase contractions, so it is not recommended for women who already have significant contractions at the origin of the opening of the cervix.

The different strapping techniques

This procedure can take place at the beginning of pregnancy or later:

  • Between 16 and 17 weeks of amenorrhea, the strapping of principle : recommended when the future mother has a problem of open bite already identified. The laying of the strapping is then preventive because his collar has not yet begun to open. The pose is performed under general anesthesia or rachianesthesis, vaginally, and lasts about 15 minutes. The future mother can stay in hospital or go home at night.
  • After 17 weeks of amenorrhea, "hot" strapping : the cervix is already open when doctors make their diagnosis but the future mother has no contraction. The pose also takes place under general anesthesia or rachianésthésie, vaginally, and lasts about 15 minutes. The future mother can stay in hospital or go home at night.

A strapping until when?

  • The doctor removed your strapping at the end of pregnancy, at the end of the 8th month. You can give birth normally, vaginally.

Strapping one day, strapping always?

  • Sadly, the gap of the cervix is definitive. You will have as many straps as pregnancies.
